Addition to Residence — Kalamassery, Ernakulam

This residential extension in Kalamassery reimagines an ageing car porch into a bold new vertical addition that integrates seamlessly with the existing home. The original structure, a single-storey residence, stood on the southern side of the site. The northern car porch—previously in poor condition—was dismantled to make way for a new two-storey block, expanding the home’s programmatic potential without disrupting its core footprint.

The ground floor of the new addition introduces a living space that flows inward from a compact yet functional porch. A new staircase connects the living area to the upper floor, facilitating independent access to the added volume. On the first floor, two bedrooms and a shared toilet are arranged around a light-filled core, with a front-facing balcony that animates the new elevation.

The architectural language of the extension deliberately contrasts the simplicity of the original home. The pitched roof, extended eaves, and full-height fenestration lend the facade a sense of clarity and rhythm. Together, the addition enhances both the usability and character of the residence—creating a dialogue between old and new, grounded in need and designed with restraint.
