Residence in Pallom, Kottayam – A Climate-Responsive Home with Attic Ventilation
Located by the side of the Main Central (M.C) Road in Pallom, Kottayam, this 1800 sq.ft single-storey residence exemplifies climate-sensitive architectural design tailored for Kerala's humid tropical context. Designed with passive cooling strategies, the house gains additional spatial quality and volume by incorporating an elevated ceiling and a spacious attic.
To ensure natural ventilation and daylighting, glass wall cut-outs have been integrated at the raised ceiling level—allowing hot air to escape while a small operable portion remains open for cross-ventilation. The living area flows into an antechamber lit by overhead pergolas, leading to three bedrooms. These spatial transitions help in diffusing light and maintaining thermal comfort.
One of the key features of this home is the large attic space, ventilated through louvered ends, which not only aids in cooling the living areas below but also serves as a versatile zone—used as a study or an evening tea space. This residence showcases a thoughtful blend of function, aesthetics, and sustainability, making it an ideal model for contemporary residential design in Kottayam.
