Residence in Kumaranalloor, Kottayam – A Thoughtful Revamp Rooted in History

Located in Kumaranalloor, Kottayam, this multi-level residence carries a layered architectural legacy. Originally built over 300 years ago, the home has undergone two rounds of revamping — the most recent one transforming it into a contemporary family home with modern comforts, while quietly honouring its past.

The current architectural expression retains almost no visible trace of the original structure, with the probable exception of a small pooja room that echoes the soul of the ancestral house. Every other space has been reimagined with clean, functional planning across two levels. The ground floor accommodates primary living spaces, including formal and informal lounges, dining, and kitchen zones, while the upper level houses bedrooms, family space, and open terraces that invite natural light and cross-ventilation.

Above the first floor, a usable attic has been designed as a vibrant retreat — envisioned to host a snooker table, table tennis setup, personal bar counter, and a compact home gym. Though not yet executed, this space is structured and ready to evolve with the lifestyle of the homeowners.

The site is finished with hard landscaping that uses natural pebbles and a curated palette of local plant species bordering the edges. This green fringe softens the structure’s perimeter and adds a quiet, grounding touch to the overall setting.

This residence stands as a careful balance between past and present — a place where thoughtful design and personal history coexist with clarity and warmth.
