Out House – Kollad, Kottayam

Set within the same compound as the main residence in Kollad, this Out House was designed as an intimate yet self-contained unit for guests. Compact in footprint—approximately 330 sq. ft. on the ground floor and 142 sq. ft. in the loft—it offers a spatial experience that feels much larger than its built-up area suggests.

The structure is crafted with cement fibre panels, each measuring 8x2 feet, stacked within a steel framework. This method allowed for a clean, modular expression while ensuring efficiency in execution. The gable roof, left exposed on the inside, adds height and lightness to the volume, while also tying it visually to the architectural language of the main house.

A steel mezzanine creates a quiet sleeping loft, accessed by a vertical ladder—functional, minimal, and compact. Below, the bed sits tucked into a double-height space washed with soft daylight through tall, carefully positioned openings.

Materials are kept honest and raw. The cement board walls are left unplastered, while the exposed steel elements give a subtle industrial edge. The narrow verandah in front—only 60 cm wide—acts more as a transitional threshold, connecting the out house to the garden and, by extension, the main residence.

Modest in size but deliberate in detail, the out house reflects the same principles we hold central: clarity in structure, efficiency in planning, and a deep respect for context.
